When to convert HEIC to WebP
Use this when the HEIC is going on a website. WebP is usually smaller than JPG at a similar look, which is why it is the default on Prepare images for a website. Camera HEIC files are often 4,000 pixels wide. Putting that on a blog as-is is wasted bytes even after a format change. Set a max width if you also need a sensible display size, or resize after.
You no longer have to “export JPG on the iPhone first” unless the browser is ancient. Current desktop and phone browsers can finish HEIC here. When Chrome on Windows cannot decode HEIC natively, a decoder runs in this tab only. The photo never leaves the device. There is no account.
Leave output on WebP and quality near 0.8 unless you see banding on a sky. If a client or CMS still rejects WebP, make a JPG instead on HEIC to JPG. Keep WebP on the live site and send them the JPG copy.
WebP can keep transparency, but iPhone camera stills do not have a clear background to keep. This is a photo pipeline, not a logo pipeline. For SVG icons, use SVG to PNG.
Batch convert a folder of holiday HEICs, download a zip, then replace originals in your theme or CDN. If someone cannot open the preview, that is a WebP to JPG job, not a reason to skip WebP on the website.
After download, compress if a host still has a cap, or strip GPS if the shot was taken at home. This page does not write PDF or HEIC.

Tips
