When to convert AVIF to PNG
Use PNG when the AVIF is a UI graphic, logo, or screenshot-like still and you need a bitmap that design tools and email still understand. PNG keeps a transparent background if the AVIF had one. JPG cannot. If you only needed a photo that double-clicks on Windows, AVIF to JPG is smaller and more compatible for camera pictures.
Modern browsers decode still AVIF in this tab, then this page writes a PNG. Files never leave the device. Animated AVIF is not supported. A damaged file fails with an error instead of a blank PNG.
Quality does not apply: PNG is lossless at this step. The file will often get larger, not smaller. That is the point if you are about to edit. After editing, export WebP or JPG for the web rather than shipping a huge PNG.
Batch convert, then zip. If the PNG is too heavy to email, make a JPG copy. If you still need a different pixel size, use Resize. This is not a layer editor and it does not cut subjects out of photos.
If decode fails, update the browser. Current Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge all open still AVIF. We will not send the file to a server to “help.”
How to do it
- Drop one or more AVIF files. They stay on this device.
- Leave output on PNG. Quality does not apply.
- Download the PNG, or a zip of the batch.
Tips
- If the AVIF was a photo, PNG will be large. JPG is usually enough.
- Transparency is kept when the AVIF had it.
- Animated AVIF is not supported.
